چکیده

This paper presents a model for the autonomous learning of smooth pursuit eye movements based on an efficient coding criterion for active perception. This model accounts for the joint development of visual encoding and eye control. Sparse coding models encode the incoming data at two different spatial resolutions and capture the statistics of the input in spatio-temporal basis functions. A reinforcement learner controls eye velocity so as to maximize a reward signal based on the efficiency of the encoding. We consider the embodiment of the approach in the iCub simulator and real robot. Motion perception and smooth pursuit control are not explicitly expressed as tasks for the robot to achieve but emerge as the result of the system’s active attempt to efficiently encode its sensory inputs. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is self-calibrating and robust to strong perturbations of the perception–action link. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Robust active binocular vision through intrinsically motivated learning

The efficient coding hypothesis posits that sensory systems of animals strive to encode sensory signals efficiently by taking into account the redundancies in them. This principle has been very successful in explaining response properties of visual sensory neurons as adaptations to the statistics of natural images. Recently, we have begun to extend the efficient coding hypothesis to active perc...

The role of areas MT and MST in coding of visual motion underlying the execution of smooth pursuit

What is the main purpose of visual motion processing? One very important aspect of motion processing is definitively the generation of smooth pursuit eye movements. These eye movements avoid motion blur of moving objects which would obstruct the analysis of the objects' visual details. However, these eye movements can only be executed if there is a moving target. So there is a very close and in...

LRP predicts smooth pursuit eye movement onset during the ocular tracking of self-generated movements.

Several studies have indicated that human observers are very efficient at tracking self-generated hand movements with their gaze, yet it is not clear whether this is simply a by-product of the predictability of self-generated actions or if it results from a deeper coupling of the somatomotor and oculomotor systems. In a first behavioral experiment we compared pursuit performance as observers ei...

Toward Sparse and Geometry Adapted Video Approximations

Video signals are sequences of natural images, where images are often modeled as piecewise-smooth signals. Hence, video can be seen as a 3D piecewise-smooth signal made of piecewise-smooth regions that move through time. Based on the piecewise-smooth model and on related theoretical work on rate-distortion performance of wavelet and oracle based coding schemes, one can better analyze the approp...

Neuronal Activity in the Caudal Frontal Eye Fields of Monkeys during Memory-Based Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements: Comparison with the Supplementary Eye Fields

Recently, we examined the neuronal substrate of predictive pursuit during memory-based smooth pursuit and found that supplementary eye fields (SEFs) contain signals coding assessment and memory of visual motion direction, decision not-to-pursue ("no-go"), and preparation for pursuit. To determine whether these signals were unique to the SEF, we examined the discharge of 185 task-related neurons...
